Following internal promotion and proactive succession planning we are looking for two VTSOs to join our Harbour Masters team in our Southampton port too assist the Assistant Harbor Master (VTS) in providing for the safe and efficient navigation within the VTS Area, assisting Marine Planning in accepting vessel bookings and answering stakeholder/public phone calls and Port permissions.
Accountabilities
- Assist the AHM (VTS) in timely, safe and efficient allocation of Pilots to vessels.
- Maintain a close liaison with the Launch Coxswain & Marine Officers ensuring the position of the Pilot launches is monitored and the AHM is kept advised of the weather and boarding conditions at the various Pilot boarding areas.
- Maintain close liaison Pilot taxi operators.
- Maintain a good understanding of the Port Regulations and Pilotage Directions.
- To use all appropriate methods of communication to liaise with vessels and agents to obtain information on movements of vessels.
- Receive and respond to enquiries from Port users, officials and other stakeholders.
- Surveillance and monitoring of vessels in the VTS area by Radar, AIS, CCTV and VHF radio for the purpose of safe navigation and protection of the environment.
- To keep the Port Management Information System with relevant agent’s interface.
- Maintain Marine records
- Any other duties that may be deemed to be within your capabilities.
Skills, experiences, qualifications & competencies
Essential
- A dynamic flexible individual with ability in regards multi-tasking.
- STCW II/1 OOW (Deck) / Master (less than 500 GT) Near Coastal / Royal Navy Navigation Watch Certificate or acceptable equivalent. An extensive list of acceptable marine qualifications can be found in MIN 692
- Excellent IT administration skills.
- Clear, concise communicator with ability to liaise with personnel and outside bodies at all levels.
- Able to work as part of a team but also using own initiative to take command of situations effectively, efficiently and calmly.
- Demonstrate good decision-making skills.
- Willingness to work a shift pattern and flexibility with regards to duties and working hours is essential.
- Willingness to work a 4 on 4 off (Days) shift pattern with flexibility required to cover day work and nights as and when required. Or fixed rostered shift pattern 4 on 4 off (2 days, 2 nights, 4 off)
Ideal
- Current V-103 qualifications C0103-1 & C0103-3.
- Working knowledge of the Central, Eastern Solent and Southampton Water.
- Global maritime distress and safety system restricted operator certificate
