Shift Supervisor - Port Operations (Stevedore)

The Role:  Shift Supervisor – Port Operations

 

Purpose:

To lead and motivate the stevedore teams to deliver the planned operations of the day.

To ensure a safe, efficient and service focused cargo handling operation is provided to our customers, in line with their needs, requirements and expectations. 

 

Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for vessel and non-vessel operations as defined by the management team, ensuring compliance with all aspects of legislation and Health & Safety, to include;
    1. Producing prompt and accurate reports
    2. Participating in investigations of accidents / incidents, communicating any learnings that have been identified. Generate recommendations and implement action plans where necessary. 
  • Successfully driving a culture which puts Health & Safety first.
  • Accountable for leading two Stevedore Operational teams to successfully deliver in improved safety, quality, service and efficiency on a day to day basis. Line management responsibility will include;
  1. Providing continuous coaching and mentoring to your team members, to include conducting regular team meetings.
  2. Ensuring Continual Professional Development is maintained, and training provided as necessary for the team.
  3. Handling staff recruitment and conducting appraisals.
  4. Carrying out disciplinary procedures where necessary.
  5. Ensuring working methods are used to maximise efficiency.
  6. Ensuring compliance and adherence to policies and procedures. 
  • Proactively collaborate with the management team to drive the best operational performance for the Stevedoring department to include; Safety, Cost, Customer, People, Quality and Delivery. Creating innovative solutions to improve on efficiency and operational effectiveness around the key KPI’s. 
  • Responsible for driving a customer centric excellence ethos within your teams, to include;
  1. Ensuring customer and manufacturer standards are always maintained and all employees under your control conform to the requirements.
  2. Being sensitive and sympathetic to our customers’ requirements and understand what their expectations are of us and how we should deliver.
  • Responsible for the management and review Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work. Monitoring their introduction, communication and ongoing compliance. Carrying out weekly/daily port and security inspections as and when required.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

Essential

  • Demonstrable leadership capability.
  • Knowledge and experience of working in a port operational environment
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Able to demonstrate a proactive, self-motivated attitude
  • Demonstrates an understanding and commitment to the key service delivery principles.
  • Demonstration of capability to multi-task and to make business decision.
  • Have an understanding a quality system
  • Full, driving licence
  • Flexible due to challenging operational demands

Ideal

  • Experience of leading continuous improvement.
  • Competent in all aspects of ro-ro operations and ability to assist with and supervise non ro-ro operations.
  • Competent in use of various types of Mechanical Handling Equipment (MHE).
  • At least 2 years’ port industry experience.
  • Have an understanding of the quality system in respect of standards required
