We are looking for a Hydrographic Surveyor to conduct all aspects of hydrographic data acquisition, processing, analysis and chart production for the Port of Southampton.

 

Accountabilities 

 

  • To undertake hydrographic survey field work on board the port survey vessels (data acquisition and quality control);
  • Data reduction and processing and the production of charts, and other documents/data as directed by the Principal Hydrographic Surveyor
  • Ensuring continuity through data archiving and maintaining records (e.g. marine assets and dredge volumes)
  • Maintenance of hydrographic equipment and systems – including survey vessel(s)
  • Conduct the maintenance of existing hydrographic equipment and assist in implementation of new tools and development of procedures and systems as appropriate
  • Boat handling on survey vessels and general boat husbandry as required
  • Assist Principal Hydrographic Surveyor with training of hydrographic and other marine staff
  • Overseeing annual preparation/production of ABP Tide table publication
  • Assist in supplying hydrographic information, data and advice to the Harbour Master and other internal/external contacts or agencies as required
  • To undertake other related marine and hydrographic duties as directed by the Harbour Master or Principal Hydrographic Surveyor and deputise for the Principal Hydrographic Surveyor as required.

 

Essential Skills & Experience

 

  • Higher education to degree/diploma level in a relevant marine/geographical discipline
  • Experience of multi- and single-beam surveying
  • Proficiency in numeracy, literacy, IT skills
  • Ability to work as part of a small specialist team with a flexible attitude
  • Confidence to follow instructions and make own decisions as required
  • Boat Handling skills, experience and qualification (ideally PB Adv commercially endorsed)
  • Experience with HYPACK and QPS suite
  • GIS and/or CAD skills
  • 2-5 years experience as a hydrographic survey
