The Role:  Assistant Shift Supervisor – Port Operations



To support the Shift Supervisor in ensuring a smooth operation. To help lead and motivate the stevedore teams to deliver the planned operations of the day. To proactively respond to changing circumstances and respond as appropriate. To ensure a safe, efficient and service focused cargo handling operation is provided to our customers, in line with their needs, requirements and expectations.



  • Undertake the day to day management of the cargo handling duties, to including driving, lashing, stowing, minibus driving and mooring and unmooring.  
  • Ensure customer and manufacturing requirements are maintained on both quality and standards.
  • Capability to include;
    • In charge (IC) of vessel operations.
    • Conducting handovers / briefings / toolbox talks
    • Being capable of managing 3rd party labour and a leading a Stevedore team when required
    • Maintaining a high level of communication between yourself and the Shift supervisor, as well as other members of the management team.
  • Be a key player in promoting a successful Health & Safety culture within ABP.
  • Support shift supervisors in daily paperwork duties such as relevant Operational Paperwork, Spot It, D&A, as well as contribute to investigations for accidents / incidents as and when required.
  • Be positively responsible for the implantation of damage reduction measures in your area
  • Actively monitor third party labour costs to ensure costs
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of a Stevedore’s skills in support of the quality processes and ensure your new team members fully understand their role and our customers’ requirements.
  • Develop positive and professional working relationships with customers
  • Be the point of contact for the customer on the vessel for a duty basis.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications


  • Previous experience in a logistic environment
  • Understand the quality systems in respect of the standards required.
  • Full driving licence.
  • Ability to lead a team operationally
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Flexible due to challenging operational demands.
  • Demonstrates ability to work in a robust, agile and flexible operational environment



  • Experience providing training to colleagues and new members of the team.
  • Port industry experience including ro-ro operations, forklift & MHE/plant equipment
  • Experience dealing with external customers
  • Experience in BSI / ISO 9001 auditing
