Here an Associated British Ports we are currently recruiting for an Operations manager to develop and lead an effective team to safely and sustainably manage a port operation focussed around passenger ferries.


Reporting into the Port Manager the scope of the role covers management of all resources involved with port side, loading, unloading, storage, inbound and outbound logistics, and movement of a wide and diverse range of products for the ferry operation along with safety management and general management of the day to day operations at the Port.


Plymouth is a bustling port contributing over £95 million to the UK economy. The port is home to Brittany Ferries whose ferries to France and Spain transport 430,000 passengers, on over 360 vessel calls each year. In addition to this Plymouth port handle around 8000 freight units each year.


It is not essential to have previous Port experience but operational management, and excellent customer skills are essential.

  • Support the Port Manager and the Commercial Manager to identify value driven opportunities and create new business strategies.
  • Maximise operational performance for Port infrastructure and assets ensuring the highest level of service is delivered for all customers, tenants, internal departments, external sub-contractors and statutory bodies.
  • Drive an effective communication strategy that supports ABP objectives and values.  Listen, support, engage and encourage employees to reach their full potential, encourage their suggestions and input to achieve excellent results. Build a strong, engaged team to provide vison and direction for the business.
  • Establish goals, set priorities and critically analyse operational performance to ensure the port meets or exceeds business objectives.
  • Ensure all activities are carried out in line with H&S requirements and are continually reviewed for safe working practice, are compliant to all policies, procedures and standard operating procedures.
  • Deliver, along with the management team, the 5 year plan by taking ownership of the actions allocated and delivering key strategic milestones supported by the operations team.
  • Act as the Port Facility Security Officer for the Port overseeing security on the port estate and of vessel operations with guidance and advice from the Regional Security Manager.
  • Deputise for the Port Manager as appropriate and support operations across the South West ports as required.




Skills, qualifications and experience

  • Proven experience in an operational management role.
  • Ability to deliver the ethos of exceptional customer service and always seeking to improve quality and service for both internal / external stakeholders.
  • Leadership qualities to drive the current team forward and develop them within their own areas, combined with previous people and team management skills.
  • Demonstrate clear abilities to influence people at all levels, internal and external, through listening and adjusting communication style to meet the needs of the audience.
  • Results orientated with good project management and execution skills.
  • Strong written and spoken English language skills.
  • Previous Health & Safety responsibilities (ideally IOSH or NEBOSH)
  • Able to act as deputy for the Port Manager when required.



  • Educated to degree level or alternative equivalent
  • Port Facility Security Officer qualification – or willing to obtain.
