Bridge Operator

About the role

Associated British Ports (ABP) is looking to recruit a Bridge Operator to join our Lowestoft Marine team. This is a key operational role, responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Lowestoft Bascule and Gull Wing Bridges, supporting vessel movements and ensuring the continued safety of navigation within the Port of Lowestoft.

Working from the Port Control Room, you will play an essential part in delivering Local Port Services and maintaining 24/7, 365‑day operational cover.  You must be able to work to the following shift pattern:  2 day shifts followed by 2 night shifts then 4 days off.  This is repeated 7 times then 18 days off. 

Key responsibilities

In this varied and safety‑critical role, you will:

  • Operate the Lowestoft Bascule and Gull Wing Bridges safely, considering the needs of vessels, pedestrians and road users
  • Provide 24‑hour VHF radio and port telephone coverage
  • Support Local Port Services, including monitoring vessel movements and allocating berths in agreement with the Harbour Master or Deputy
  • Act as the first point of contact for emergencies and assist with the initiation of port emergency procedures
  • Maintain accurate port records, both paper and electronic, including data input for billing and compliance purposes
  • Manage and record vessel fuelling activities
  • Issue ABP permission forms for activities such as diving and hot works on ABP berths
  • Report unsafe practices, damage or potentially dangerous situations to the Harbour Master or Deputy
  • Liaise with ABP colleagues, contractors, vessel operators, agents and customers to support port operations
  • Operate and implement the port flood warning service
  • Comply with ABP’s safety management systems and health and safety requirements
  • Assist with training and familiarisation of new staff when required

What we’re looking for

Essential:

  • Ability to work a rostered shift pattern, including nights, weekends and other unsociable hours
  • Short Range VHF Radio Certificate
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong IT skills and general computer literacy
  • Ability to remain calm and effective when working under pressure
  • Understanding of safety, regulatory and compliance responsibilities
  • A flexible, committed team‑focused approach

Desirable:

  • A marine background or sound marine knowledge
  • Knowledge of port operations and port emergency plans
  • Job‑relevant IT qualifications (e.g. Excel and Word)
