Coxswain Patrol

Associated British Ports (ABP) is the UK’s largest ports operator, playing a vital role in keeping Britain trading. We are now seeking an experienced and capable Coxswain Patrol to join our Marine Services team in Southampton.

The Role

As Coxswain Patrol, you will take command of a patrol and pilot launch to support the statutory duties of the Harbour Authority and the operational requirements of the Port of Southampton’s pilotage service. Operating across Southampton and Gosport, the role is central to maintaining safety, compliance and efficient marine operations within the harbour.

Key Responsibilities

  • Command and operate a patrol/pilot launch in support of Harbour Authority and pilotage operations
  • Carry out patrol duties as directed by VTS and Assistant Harbour Masters, including attendance at marine incidents
  • Enforce Southampton Harbour Byelaws on behalf of the Harbour Master
  • Safely convey marine pilots and other authorised personnel as required
  • Maintain the patrol vessel, ensuring all equipment and lifesaving appliances are operational and the launch is kept in a clean condition
  • Identify, report and document any defects or maintenance issues
  • Check that navigational aids within the area of operation are functioning as published
  • Investigate oil spillages and pollution incidents, gathering samples, statements and evidence as required
  • Support and supervise the Deckhand to ensure duties are carried out in line with Statutory Harbour Authority requirements
  • Maintain professional and regulatory knowledge, including Marine Guidance Notices and Local Notices to Mariners
  • Undertake training as required to ensure ongoing competence and compliance with regulations

About You

You will be a confident and safety-focused marine professional with strong local knowledge and excellent communication skills.

You will ideally have:

  • STCW qualifications
  • A commercially endorsed powerboat certificate or Yachtmaster qualification
  • Experience operating in Southampton Water and the Solent
  • A good working knowledge of Southampton Harbour Byelaws
  • Strong leadership, communication and decision-making skills
