What is all about
This apprenticeship offers a hands-on opportunity to build a career in port operations. You’ll gain experience across a range of activities including cargo handling, plant and equipment use, and supporting safe, efficient port operations.
You will work towards the EAL Level 2 NVQ in Port Operations, developing both the practical skills and knowledge needed to operate safely and effectively within a busy port environment.
This role is based in a busy operational port environment. You will be working around heavy machinery, vessels and cargo, so a strong focus on health, safety and teamwork is essential.
Key Responsibilities
As a Port Operative Apprentice, you will support day-to-day operations across the port, including:
- Supporting the safe movement and handling of cargo, including loading, unloading and storage
- Assisting with slinging and signalling operations to safely transfer loads
- Helping to receive, store and dispatch cargo, ensuring correct handling and documentation
- Carrying out basic maintenance and checks on plant and equipment
- Supporting the team to maintain environmental good practice within the port
- Assisting in resolving customer or operational issues where required
- Following all health & safety and port security procedures at all times
- Working as part of a team to support vessel operations and general port activities
Training and Development
You will complete the following as part of your apprenticeship:
- Mandatory units:
- Work Safely
- Maintain Security in Ports
- Selected units (this role):
- Maintain environmental good practice
- Resolve customer service problems
- Transfer loads through slinging and signalling
- Receive, store and dispatch cargo
- Undertake basic maintenance of plant and equipment
Training will be delivered both on the job at Garston and via block release at Port Training Services in Blyth (travel required).
What are the entry requirements?
- Must be 18 years or over (due to working with plant and equipment)
- Full UK driving licence
- Willingness to travel and stay away occasionally for training in Blyth
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
What are the career opportunities?
On completion, apprentices may progress into permanent Port Operative roles or further development within port operations, including specialist equipment operation or supervisory roles.
