Closing date: 3rd October 2025
At Associated British Ports (ABP), we proudly serve our customers and communities in pursuit of our twin missions: Keeping Britain Trading and Enabling the Energy Transition. As the UK’s largest ports group, with 21 locations handling around 100 million tonnes of cargo every year, we are a vital enabler of trade, green energy infrastructure and investment in coastal communities.
We are now seeking a Project Manager (Major Projects) to lead delivery of high-profile, complex infrastructure projects that directly contribute to our growth ambitions and the UK’s energy transition.
The Role
As a Project Manager in our Major Projects team, you will take ownership of projects typically ranging from £20m up to £200m+ CAPEX, leading them across their full lifecycle from Strategic Definition to Operational Handover. You will work cross-functionally with ABP colleagues and delivery partners, ensuring projects are delivered on time, to budget and to the highest safety and quality standards.
Two critical areas of focus in the near term include:
• Landside Infrastructure
Leading development of quayside infrastructure, port buildings and structures, and transport links. You will also oversee our landside ecology package (planned for 2026). This portfolio is significant, with an estimated value in excess of £250m.
• Connections (Statutory Undertakers’ Works)
Delivering major utility connections and enabling works to support both port operations (energy, water, communications) and the power supply required for offshore wind turbine construction. This package is expected to be worth more than £50m, and will require expertise in managing large-scale utilities projects.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead multi-disciplinary project teams to develop and deliver robust business cases, ensuring value for money and strong return on investment.
• Oversee design, procurement, planning consents and construction delivery, managing contractors and internal resources to achieve high performance.
• Develop and implement stakeholder and statutory engagement strategies, including with local communities, regulators, and customers.
• Manage project risks, opportunities and dependencies, ensuring compliance with ABP’s standards for health, safety and sustainability.
• Champion best practice in project management, contributing to continuous improvement across the Major Projects team.
About You
Essential:
• Proven track record in managing major capital infrastructure projects (£20m+).
• Experience of planning and consenting processes (pre-application through to discharge of conditions).
• Strong leadership skills with the ability to drive performance across diverse, cross-functional teams.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, including with Executive-level stakeholders.
• Flexibility to travel to ABP ports and project locations across the UK.
Desirable:
• Degree in Project Management or relevant engineering discipline.
• Chartered status (e.g. CEng MICE, MAPM or similar).
• Experience in marine, port or large-scale utility/energy projects.
• Knowledge of environmental regulation and nationally significant infrastructure projects (NSIPs).
Why Join ABP?
• Play a pivotal role in shaping the UK’s energy transition and major infrastructure investment.
