General Purpose Marine Operative (Deckhand)

Here at Associated British Ports we are currently recruiting for a General Purpose Marine Operative (Deckhand) based at our Pilot station in Barry. This is a 6 months fixed term position.


Reporting to the Marine Maintenance Manager the GPMO Deckhand will be responsible for successfully completing the Pilot Launches whilst meeting the statutory duties of the Harbour Authority.

Main Duties

  • Assist the Pilot Launch Coxswain in the operation of the Pilot Launch
  • Assist the Coxswain to convey pilots and other authorized persons as requested by LPS and provide for the safe transfer of pilots and others to/from vessels as directed.         
  • Assist the Coxswain to maintain the launch in carrying out routing checks & maintenance and repairing minor defects.
  • Ensure any defects are reported to the Coxswain            
  • Ensure pilot ladders appear in good order and are rigged in accordance with relevant regulations.
  • Assist in the investigation of pollution reports within the arear and take samples where required.   
  • Willing to undertake training to Coxswain           
  • Any other duties as directed by the Operational Maintenance Supervisor.


Essential Requirements:

  • Experience of working on small vessels, preferably power driven vessels.
  • Computer literate including Word, Excel and Outlook to effectively handle company systems.
  • Able to communicate via VHF radio to provide concise instruction to vessels arriving or departing
  • Able to carry out routing tasks without supervision.
  • Full UK driving licence.


  • Working knowledge Marine Safety / Quality Management systems and procedures.
  • Experience of operating commercial work boats and vessels under 24mtrs LOA.
