Role: Mechanic

Location: Ayr




The Port Mechanic supports the Engineering Supervisor and Engineering Resources Manager to ensure that the Port facilities, plant and equipment meet all current legislation and the operational needs of the business are met, making sure costs are adhered to as well as achieving high levels of customer service.


To carry out planned maintenance, breakdown repairs, refurbishment, installation, improvements and modifications to heavy plant and machinery in order to maximise performance and maintain equipment to the required standards.

Responsible for the delivery of service, maintenance and repairs of heavy plant and machinery at the Ports of Ayr & Troon. Delivery of maintenance and operational plans, key performance indicators and the development of continuous improvement in functional area.




  • To carry out daily maintenance work requirements for Engineering team and deliver high levels of compliance
  • To ensure all Health and Safety & Compliance targets and objectives are met and the detail of company safety policies and procedures are maintained to the safest working environment for all employees and other Port users
  • To promote and work to the company core values, ensuring standards are consistently applied.
  • Lead by example, setting exemplary standards for behaviour and conduct.
  •  Assist individuals within the Engineering team, influencing and motivating colleagues to achieve their maximum potential.


About you:


You’ll be an experienced Mechanic with experience of maintaining industrial plant equipment. Working within a small team you’ll need to have experience of fault finding/diagnostic activity, carrying out reactive & planned maintenance to mobile plant and hydraulically operated machinery. The role requires a high level of flexibility in order to keep our busy ports operating on a consistent basis. The role is ideally suited to a candidate who is looking to work in the Ayr area and wants to work for a company who offer a wide range of training and development opportunities.


Skills, Experience & Qualifications:



  • Ability to cope with fast changing work priorities in a highly pressurised and demanding environment. Frequent periods of concentration on highly complex technical problems whilst under pressure to return equipment into service.
  • Frequent climbing and working at height is required. Also ability to use general and specialised diagnostic equipment.
  • Experience in maintaining mobile plant and equipment with a bias to hydraulically operated machinery.
  • Minimum ONC or equivalent in an Engineering discipline. 
  • Coverage for colleagues during holidays.
  • Carry out engineering breakdown cover as and when required.
  • Willingness to travel to other ABP port locations and business travel UK wide and overseas.
  • Be flexible with time management to suit the challenging operational requirements across the business units.
  • IT skills to include Outlook, Excel and Word
  • Full UK car driving licence.



  • Health & Safety qualification (ideally IOSH or NEBOSH).
  • Results orientated with project management and execution skills.
  • Engineering and operational plant licences.
