The Role:  Multi-skilled Maintenance Engineer/Fitter



To deliver the Maintenance departments planned preventative and reactive tasks on a daily basis along with general maintenance activities. To continually improve the performance of the port in its 4 key principles – safety, quality, service and efficiency.




  • Ensure compliance with Health Safety and Environmental requirements and other legislation including contributing to the development and review of Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work, work with the Compliance Team to deliver safety around the port areas
  • Carry out electrical/ mechanical maintenance works to a variety of assets in a diligent and timely manner in order to meet the requirements of port operations both individually and as part of a larger team (including working with other departments/ third party contractors as required). 
  • Communicate during servicing operations and the repair of plant and equipment providing required scope of works and parts required etc.
  • Contribute to a continual improvement culture amongst staff, through the development of improved systems/procedures that will drive forward all aspects of the port’s operation.
  • Provide support and guidance to the Semi-Skilled Engineers and Apprentices in undertaking the works in a safe, cost-effective and timely manner.
  • Operate both ABP’s and hired vehicles, plant and equipment subject to any necessary training having been provided.
  • Undertake all works commensurate with both their trade and other disciplines/ contractor’s subject to either appropriate training or ability to carry out the works.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications



  • Sound knowledge of Health & Safety legislation.
  • Service and Customer driven with good interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate at all levels.
  • Pro-active approach.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Time served with an Engineering qualification (ONC/HNC or equivalent) in a mechanical bias and or in Electrical qualification (NVQ Level 3/ ONC/ HNC)
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Capable of fault-finding in electrical or mechanical plant and equipment including an understanding of schematics
  • Confident at working at height or around water
  • Maintenance Experience
  • Be part of a ‘call-out roster’ and be flexible to work/ call-out requirements



  • Working knowledge of engineering/maintenance in the port industry.
  • Knowledge of working with diesel powered generator sets.
  • Familiar with the use of Siemens PLC units.
  • Multi-skilled  
  • Experience of Compex
