The Role:  Shift Technician



To deliver the port operations plan on a duty basis and maintenance activities. To continually improve the performance of the port in its 4 key principles – safety, quality, service and efficiency.




  • To provide a maintenance service to ensure the smooth running of the Port of Southampton, as well as general port service delivery activities.
  • Work with the company to promote a safety culture, acting as an ambassador for the ‘Beyond Zero’ safety campaign. Also ensuring all works that are planned and carried out are done so in a safe manner.
  • Installation of cruise access infrastructure
  • Day-to-day maintenance of plant, equipment and facilities associated with the Port, including carrying out testing, inspection and rectification works.
  • Planned and reactive maintenance on a variety of assets.
  • On a cruise shift work alongside the duty Service Delivery Operatives to deliver a customer centric service to the cruise vessels.
  • Provide breakdown cover 7 days a week and support operational activities as required.
  • Fault diagnosis and repairs to port equipment.
  • Regularly deliver improvement ideas around the four key service delivery principles.
  • To work collaboratively with Health and Safety and Environmental teams.
  • Co-operate and work closely with other disciplines and contractors.
  • To carry out work at height.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications


  • Time served as a trained engineer with a minimum City & Guilds qualification or equivalent.
  • Capable of obtaining information from drawings of various standards.
  • Flexible approach to working duties / hours.
  • Self-motivated with good communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative
  • Full, clean driving licence.
  • Ability to work on-call/out of hours when required
  • Confident working at height and on or around water.



  • Working knowledge of engineering / maintenance in a port industry.
