About ABPmer

ABPmer is a leading marine consultancy with a strong industry reputation for maritime and environment technical advice and support.  As a wholly owned subsidiary of Associated British Ports, maritime operational support is a key component of the work we do.  We focus on operational support for harbour authorities, seaports, the shipping sector, recreational boating and the aquaculture industry.


About the Role

We are seeking a self-motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Maritime Team at ABPmer on a fixed term contract of 12 months with potential for a permanent position after this period.  This technical role requires an understanding of shipping and navigation management, the port and harbour industry and recreational boating. This role is based in our Southampton offices with views up and down Southampton Water.


Day to day tasks will involve the collation, analysis and interpretation of maritime operational data, clear and concise briefing note and report writing, combined with oral presentation skills.  You will work closely with other ABPmer teams as well as Harbour Masters, Pilots and marine operational staff.  We deliver varied projects throughout the UK and overseas, some of our project work requires small boat survey work, site-visits and working away from home for extended periods.

Essential skills

  • Educated to degree-level in a relevant subject or equivalent deck officer training;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of port and/or vessel operations;
  • Excellent time-management, organisational and prioritisation skills;
  • Proficient Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint user; 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; and
  • UK travel is an expectation, a driving licence and a self-sufficient mindset is essential. 


Desirable skills and experience:

  • Ability to interpret and present maritime information;
  • Understanding of risk management processes;
  • Database, Geographic Information System (GIS) or coding skills; and
  • Small boat handling skills.
