General Purpose Marine Operative

Role: General Purpose Marine Operative

Location: Lowestoft



  • General maintenance and housekeeping around the ports.
  • Mooring and Unmooring vessels.
  • Be part of the Oil Response Team for the East Anglia Ports. Ensure equipment is in good condition and ready to deploy at all times.
  • Compliance with Safety Management Systems and company Health and Safety requirements/directives.
  • Pilot boat crew member: Deckhand potential to progress to relief Coxswain
  • On occasions assist the Marine Team in Ipswich with conservancy,  survey and other marine related duties. 
  • Opportunity to train to provide emergency cover at Port control 
  • Opportunity to assist at Lowestoft Haven Marina.


Skills, experiences, qualifications and competencies




  • Have a valid ENG 1 medical or the ability to obtain one
  • Desire to work in a port and on the pilot launch
  • Ability to work in a team as well as independently.
  • Ability to work on a rostered shift pattern which includes unsociable hours, weekends and bank holidays.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Job relevant IT experience (excel and word)
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • A flexible and committed approach to working within a small team that strives to provide a high-quality Port and Marine service
  • Experience and knowledge of boating/sailing/marine




  • Personal Sea Survival Training
  • Knowledge of mandatory, regulatory and safety responsibilities relevant to the main duties
  • RYA Power boat Level 2, Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats 
  • Knowledge of Port Operations and Port Emergency Plans.
  • Completed a Marine apprenticeship
  • Short-Range VHF Radio certificate.
  • Experience with boat handling.
  • Forklift truck license
  • Banksman/slinger certification
  • Oil response Training

The roles offer a wide range of opportunities for progression and development. The role includes working on the pilot boat after training to support a 24/7, 365 day pilotage service. This role involves working weekends, bank holidays as part of a rota system with other team members.
