The Role:  Trainee Procurement Specialist



The purpose of the Trainee Procurement Specialist role is to support the Regional Procurement Specialist and purchasing team to develop Procurement Strategy, implement best practice procurement across assigned areas of spend with the aim of maximising cost savings to the business whilst delivering best value and performance from the supply chain.


This role will ensure support of cost effective and efficient sourcing and procurement of materials and services across its assigned categories by exploiting group purchasing power where possible and ensuring leading procurement practices are undertaken. As well as delivering excellent commercial value to the business this role will ensure that ABP and its supply chain use safe, sustainable and responsible procurement practices that protect long-term value and avoid legal and reputational impacts as well as improving the Procure to Pay lifecycle processes.



  • Help support regional procurement strategies, sourcing and contract management projects, and supplier relationship management that support business performance and cost reduction targets.
  • Identify opportunities to increase compliance of regional and functional teams using Group contracts or consolidating supplies within the region.
  • Support delivery of a defined and agreed Procurement work plan.
  • Review and support the update of contracts, including reviewing service level agreements and key performance indicators with the key functions.
  • Support the Monitoring and evaluation of supplier performance covered by category strategies.
  • Support the regional procurement tendering process and ABP Supplier portal administration.
  • Support the business in identification, assessment and management of potential risks associate with differing sourcing and contract management strategies for assigned categories of spend
  • Ensure Procurement activities carried out comply with the ABP Group Procurement policy
  • Support implementation of contract management process to realise maximum benefit from the procurement activity with reviews of business usage and contract and purchase compliance, and provide insight through the analysis of spend, contract metrics, supply markets and savings.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications


  • Knowledge of delivering procurement requirements including; business engagement, procurement strategy, strategic sourcing, contract negotiation, contract performance management and supplier relationship management, across a range of spend categories.
  • Commercially aware, analytical and innovative in their thinking.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and relational abilities.
  • Strong drive for continuous improvement, self-starter who can work independently – Willing to work closely with functions to help deliver their requirements.
  • Excellent IT skills in MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel.



  • Willing to work towards CIPS qualifications
  • Knowledge of procurement under the Utilities Contracts Regulations 2019 or Public Contract Regulations 2015.
  • An understanding of Project management and Asset management principles and process
  • Knowledge in various forms of contract.
  • Experience of sourcing systems and purchase to pay modules in an Enterprise Resource Planning system, ideally Mainsaver & SAP
