Assistant Operations Manager - Immingham Container Terminal

The Role:  Assistant Operations Manager – Immingham Container Terminal



To lead the operations teams in the Humber Container Terminal which incorporates yard and vessel operations along with ensuring the terminal is fully compliant with all legal legislation.


The terminals handle approximately 290k units over 1,200 sailings per year across Immingham and Hull.  There are 8 STS cranes across both terminals with a further 55 pieces of plant and equipment.


You will be accountable for between 10 – 45 direct reports within operations including operatives, plus agency staff who support workload demands above the core




Key Accountabilities:


  • Responsible for the management and development of a high performing, safety and productivity driven team.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all operations are planned, managed and executed in a safe, efficient and productive manner.
  • Health & Safety of the operatives on the terminal
  • Contributes to the Health & Safety and Environmental management of all operations
  • Ensure the operation operates in line with all relevant legislation
  • Highlighting opportunities for safety and productivity improvements in the terminal’s operation
  • Collaborates with the Terminal Manager, on an ongoing basis to enhance and improve the terminal’s general housekeeping standards
  • Meets and, where possible, exceeds internal targets and contractual service level agreements (SLA) for all customers
  • Implementing the daily operations plan, ensuring that operatives are provided with the correct information, instruction and training to complete the KPI’s / SLA’s
  • Ensuring procedures, SSOW, risk assessments and permits are always followed 
  • Monitors, records and follows up on any incidents or accidents.
  • Collaborates with the Central Planning Function to ensure a process is in place for the allocation of resource – avoiding third-party usage and encouraging mobility across the terminal and ports.
  • In the event of an emergency and as part of the Terminal’s emergency response plan, you will be responsible for acting as a site main controller.
  • Deputises for the Terminal Manager as required.

You will have the technical capability but enjoy working in an operations environment.  The key to your success will be the ability to encourage, support and manage a small team.  You will be an ambassador for ABP - clearly living and demonstrating the company’s vision and values. 



Skills, Experience & Qualifications



  • A safety-focused individual with a proven track record of   managing the safety of a large team in a high paced, intense environment
  • Proven Operations Management experience with regards to commodity intake and loading operations
  • Strong business and commercial acumen
  • Articulate and able to use a variety of communication channels
  • Demonstratable evidence of motivating others, whilst demonstrating energy and enthusiasm   
  • Able to deal with business ambiguity
  • Able to manage resources to deal with an ever-changing schedule
  • Work under pressure and to tight deadlines



  • Strong IT skills evidenced in an operational environment
  • Agile
