ABP are recruiting for a trainee pilot to join the pilotage team based on the Humber. You will be responsible for the safe pilotage of vessels from the point of embarkation to the point of disembarkation within the Humber competent harbour authority area.


What you’ll be doing….

  • Develop and maintain a knowledge and understanding of the marine safety management systems, emergency procedures / plans and operational procedures, in use.
  • The compilation of vessel passage plans considering harbour authority guidelines and Directions, Humber Bylaws and berth guidelines.
  • Conduct vessels in compulsory pilotage district within ABP Humber CHA area of jurisdiction and conduct non-compulsory pilotage vessels, if services are requested.
  • Maintain and develop the required skills and knowledge for continued authorisation as a marine pilot and undertake all training as required.
  • Maintain and develop a comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of all navigational matters within the port area.
  • Assist in the training of pilots, trainee pilots and apprentice pilots, including assessments and examinations.
  • Assist in training of Pilotage Exemption Certificate holders, including assessments and examinations.
  • Prepare and submit incident / accident into the reports, as required .
  • Provide professional advice to the Harbour Master and Pilotage Operation Managers on local navigational and other port marine issues when required.
  • Act as duty pilot when required.
  • Provide Vessel Traffic Services support if/when required.
  • Provide co-ordination support to all LPS, including liaison with port stakeholders and internal ABP departments to help maintain delivery of a high quality, safe and efficient marine service.
  • Other relevant tasks and duties as required by the Harbour Master or Pilotage Operations Managers.


What you’ll need….

  • STCW II/2 Certificate of Competency - Master (Unlimited); Chief Mate (Unlimited) with command experience, considered.
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Fitness to ENG-1 standards
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence, engage and coach.
  • Knowledge of the Port Marine Safety Code.
  • A flexible approach to working arrangements and service delivery.


Ideally, you'll also have….

  • Two years sea going experience in command
  • Geographical knowledge of the Humber district
  • Previous pilotage and ship handling experience, or a PEC holder.
