Here at Associated British Ports we are recruiting for a SAP Procurement Solutions Manager to join our growing IT function. We are currently undergoing an IT transformation and this is an exciting time as we build an IT function that will drive technological change within Associated British Ports. This vacancy can be based anywhere in the UK, however there will be regular travel to our ports.


This is an exciting new role as the SAP Procurement Solutions Manager is accountable for the IT solutions in their functional area, supporting the needs of the Procurement Business functions.

As the SAP Procurement Solutions Manager you will work closely with the Business and SAP functional teams to ensure the rights solutions are selected and delivered for ABP. You will possess SAP consulting experience and ideally possess S/4 HANA experience.


Having a strong background in SAP and a deep understanding of the ABP Business, your role is part architect, part team lead for their delivery area. Guiding the business on best practice SAP, keeping their skills up to date by working with strategic partners, and taking an active role in understanding the SAP roadmap, you will ensure advice can be given on the best way to solve Business problems, and deliver value.


You will manage a 3rd party functional team. Ensuring the team work collaboratively, efficiently and that capacity is balanced is also a key part of this role. ABP runs teams not projects, developing and empowering people, maintaining and improving skills, ensuring that solutions are supported and continuously improved. In this environment it is vital that the SAP Solution Manager has a good understanding of delivery, capacity planning, and agile ways of working.

  • Accountability for designs in the Procurement solution area.
  • Build and manage relationships with Business stakeholders, working as one team with Business Process Owners and Super Users and related Business functions.
  • Work with Business and IT to plan and deliver a roadmap of change in Central Systems, focussing on standard, simple, and right fit solutions.
  • Perform software selection (where SAP not obvious option) supported by Enterprise and Technical Architecture
  • Review and prioritise CR demands with the Business
  • Manage impact assessment for CRs in their area (getting inputs from all relevant teams), ensuring detailed requirements are captured.
  • Accountable and responsible for design review, ensuring alignment to architecture principles, roadmap, best practice, providing guidance and approval to build (CR and Project designs)
  • Works with Business and Business Partnering to agree responsibilities around Business delivery and Business change related to release (e.g. ensuring Process maps, business changes activities (comms, training etc) are planned in for delivery.
  • Reviews and approves test scope (SIT) prior to testing
  • Works closely with the delivery lead(s) to the track status of their delivery portfolio, reports and communicates to team, peers, management and stakeholders.
  • Supports delivery leads in the development of delivery plans.
  • Prepares resource and capacity plans for team, as well as allocating resources to work (alongside Functional leads).
  • Acts as a channel for internal communications within solution area.
  • Manages and assesses team performance (Internal and Vendor)
  • Supervises ABP employees in team (as relevant). Manages team development: objectives, coaching, training, and opportunities.
  • Analyses data to enhance service delivery, identifying and implementing areas of improvement.
  • Manages risk and issues across their solution area


Skills, experiences, qualifications and competencies


  • Excellent process understanding, and functional understanding of SAP with background as functional lead in Procurement solutions in SAP.
  • Good understanding of overall SAP Solution architecture and cross functional solution aspects across front and back office process areas.
  • Proven track record in managing support and delivery teams in companies with a complex, highly integrated application landscape
  • Proven track record in project delivery of highly complex and integrated application solutions
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of different delivery methods (Agile and Waterfall) and ITIL SM processes.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills
  • Experience of Team Management with multi-location teams
  • Ability to bring multi-disciplined teams, in a matrix organisation together into one delivery team
  • Ability to comprehend and give strategic direction not just tactical
  • Excellent management, interpersonal, written and verbal communication, and organizational skills
  • Flexibility to adjust to multiple demands, shifting priorities, ambiguity and rapid change
  • Ability to work and team with a multitude of different people within and outside of IT to balance demands
  • Ability to deal efficiently with escalations and difficult situations/people under pressure
  • Extensive experience working with 3rd party vendors as service providers


  • Knowledge of SRM, VIM, Open Text and Accounts Payable desirable.
  • Experience of working in any one of the functional areas used within ABP
  • Possess a degree in an IT related subject relevant to this post
