Role: Engineering Programme Manager

Location: Humber – Immingham or Hull


Associated British Ports (ABP) is both a major landlord and port operator with 21 port locations in the UK. Our Humber operation incorporates 4 ports in Immingham, Hull, Goole and Grimsby and handles over 60 million tonnes of Cargo combined on an annual basis. We work very closely with our customers to provide innovative solutions to logistics within the UK and on the back of this deliver a number of projects annually with major impact to the Britain’s economy and to the long term effectiveness of the shipping industry.

The Humber ports have a major impact to our sustainability goals with the UK’s largest solar array on a private building, assisting Siemens with building offshore energy generation and delivering projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions.


Due to an internal promotion we’re currently looking to recruit an Engineering Programme Manager to head up our project delivery capacity. Managing a team of 10 you will oversee around 50 live projects which fall into both OPEX and CAPEX budgets up to around £20m in value. These will involve full lifecycle project delivery including establishing scope, cost estimating, risk management and contractor management. The majority of projects will be delivered in a live environment and you should be used to working in this type of industry with candidates from a ports background particularly encouraged to apply.

You should have a technical background with qualifications in a relevant civil engineering, M&E, construction or heavy industry background, ideally chartered although we have introduced initiatives to encourage all of our engineering staff to gain certification so are able to assist. Your experience should be in a senior project delivery role with strong team management skills and demonstrable experience of effective coaching and mentoring of your team to consistent project delivery within a safe environment.


Essential Skills

  • Relevant technical, professional qualification.
  • Relevant Project Management qualification
  • 10+ years’ experience of working within in an infrastructure development and delivery environment in a project management role, and evidence that this has involved delivering projects to time, cost and quality objectives
  • Contract management and experience of Construction contracts e.g .NEC, ICC, FIDIC
  • Ability to create plans and coordinate project delivery.
  • Ability to make decisions and solve problems in a timely manner.
  • Ability to respond to project adjustments and alterations promptly and efficiently.
  • Ability to manage a team’s workflow and ensure deadlines are met.
  • Excellent communication skills, good leadership skills as well as being persuasive, encouraging and motivating
