Utilities Efficiency Manager - Humber Region

The Role – Utilities Efficiency Manager (Humber Region)

 

Purpose:

To proactively manage the Humber ports’ utilities consumption and customer recharges with the primary aim of reducing consumption across all utilities, including water, electricity and gas. This will include identifying and quantifying efficiency opportunities across all aspects of utilities and delivering efficiency and improvement projects. You will engage with colleagues across all departments as well as tenants and customers to secure buy-in, ownership and delivering results.

You will work closely with Group to make the Humber Ports as sustainable as possible aligned to the group objectives to decarbonise our port operations by continuing to invest in technology, facilities and our ways of working and ABP’s commitment to support the UK’s target of net zero emissions by 2050 and gain an in-depth understanding of the utilities infrastructure and planning improvements to target wastage and make efficiency savings.

 

Key Accountabilities:

 

  • Work with the region’s leadership teams to develop and deliver a robust, comprehensive regional utilities strategy for the Humber Ports that minimises waste, improves efficiency by reducing overall consumption and ensures all third-party uses are accounted for and recharged.
  • Proactively manage the Utilities budget of c£8m of revenue and c£13m of cost. Including regular reviews with Finance Business Partners and assisting with budget preparation and then delivery of that budget.
  • Develop a working technical understanding of the Humber Port’s utilities networks.
  • Identify and implement efficiency opportunities and savings projects (including business case profiles) informed by data and a technical understanding of the Port utilities networks.
  • Project manage the implementation of agreed efficiency opportunities.
  • Provide monthly updates to the Head of Property, covering consumption, the status of efficiency opportunities and projects, verified with data.
  • Working closely with the Group Energy Generation and Storage Team help support the development of the Humber solar, wind and storage projects
  • Review and monitor on an ongoing basis both the performance of energy-saving initiatives and the metering systems throughout the region.
  • Understand and implement both the main requirements of the Energy Management System (EnMS) and the ISO Standard in relation to 50001 and further development into ISO 14001. Assist the Humber Head of Operations with ensuring compliance at port level with the implementation of any actions and recommendations from the audits.
  • Attend group energy meetings and chair local energy meetings as required to share best practice across the Region and the Group.
  • Working closely with Group to set the annual Humber Electricity Tariffs, advise all customers and manage any issues arising.
  • Continuous improvement by keeping up to date with new guidance, energy innovations and legislation relating to energy management attending courses as required​​.
  • Meet regularly with stakeholders including Terminal Managers and customers to review how we can reduce consumption.

 

About you:

You will be a highly motivated individual who is passionate about reducing our carbon footprint. You will be able to communicate effectively with strong interpersonal and presentational skills. You will have excellent analytical skills with a pragmatic and proactive approach to problem solving.  It is also essential you are able to apply a considered and commercial viewpoint.

 

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

 

  • Strong technical understanding of the wider energy market and utility networks together with a proven track record of delivery in all aspects of energy management
  • Ability to work on their own initiative as well as part of the wider port and Group teams.
  • Ability to work on their own initiative as well as part of the wider port and Group teams.
  • Ability to lead projects as well as be a participant in others, both across multiple disciplinary teams.
  • A good negotiator with sound commercial and business acumen.
  • Computer skills (Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook and proficient in the use of AutoCAD application)
  • Driving licence.
  • Previous energy management experience
  • Previous experience of project coordination with multiple contractors and management of assigned budget
