PLEASE NOTE: The base location is FLEXIBLE - anywhere across Wales & Short Sea Ports (W&SSP) i.e. East Anglia, South Wales, Garston 


The Role:  Asset Manager (Civils)



To manage the civil assets across a portfolio of 16 UK port estates. Assets include all fixed infrastructure i.e. buildings, roads, bridges, roadways and quay walls.

You will be responsible for the rolling asset investment plans for the ports which will be underpinned by a robust understanding of asset criticality and condition.



  • Ensuring all policies, legal requirements and best practices are developed (in a means that is both practical and deliverable at port level) and fully implemented across W&SSP.
  • Producing TotEx (OpEx and CapEx) investment plans (5yr - 1yr), underpinned by robust asset criticality and condition knowledge.
  • Development and implementation of asset risk mitigation plans.
  • Creation of technical / performance engineering standards and liaison with procurement.
  • Lead and champion initiatives and the consistent application across W&SSP.
  • Ensure alignment with the centre of excellence and other senior management colleagues across ABP.
  • Mentor and coach the Wales & Short Sea Ports teams in Asset Management practices.
  • Keep up to date both with functional knowledge and skills but also understanding of local community, customer and marketplace issues. Ensure the maintenance of internal and external networks to ensure exposure to and the development of professional best practice.



About you:

We’re not necessarily looking for someone who knows their way around a port, but we are looking for someone who considers themselves as an expert in the management of civil assets and fixed infrastructure. You will be a real team player, eager to get stuck in to this exciting and fast-paced industry and work hard. The key to success in this role is strong leadership, it is essential that you can use your initiative and be proactive.    


Skills, Experience & Qualifications


  • Significant experience in an asset-intensive industry with a civil infrastructure specialism
  • Detailed and working knowledge of external legislation and internal policy requirements.
  • Proven track record in strategic planning.
  • Up to date in the latest technological developments.
  • As this is a functional leadership position the job holder is expected to be a role model, to act as a team player, coach and facilitator - within Project Management in ABP and within their regional team.
  • Strategic, innovative, highly commercial and analytical.
  • The job holder needs excellent interpersonal, communication and relational abilities - understands the link between engagement and performance.
  • Strong drive for continuous improvement - never satisfied with the status quo 



  • Knowledge and experience of ISO 55000.
  • Experience in portfolio asset management.
  • Experience in working with asset management modules in an Enterprise Resource Planning system, ideally SAP
